Content Matters – What Are You About?

To drive traffic to your blog, you must have content.

The big blue blob is the cumulative hit count (scaled from 0 to 20k on the left). The red line is the cumulative post count (scaled from 0 to 90 on the right), and the orange line is the cumulative word count (scaled from 0 to 60k on the right).

As you can see from the graph of the relationship between posts, words, and page views on my main blog, Working It Out, my page views have followed as my content has increased.

Now, this hasn’t happened without promotion, and having a promotion strategy is a key to getting the eyeballs to your pages, but without content, no matter how hard you promote, there is nothing there for your audience to see.

This is one reason the PastADay2011 and PostAWeek2011 challenges are so important for bloggers – without content, you have nothing.

But before you can post, you have to know what you are going to post.  IMHO it is best to have a strategy for what your blog is about before you get started.  It may evolve over time, but you may want to start another blog if you stray too far from your original vision.

What is your blog about?

I’d like your feedback.  Post a comment below.  I’ll be using your comments to strategize about how to promote your material.

Jim Adcock is a SharePoint Administrator, and blogs about SharePoint at his main blog, Working It Out. He is also Vice President of Launch Pad Job Club, an organization in Austin, Texas, whose mission is help people who have lost their jobs to get the skills they need to land their next job, and to help them cope with the interim between jobs. Consequently, Jim also blogs about career management. He also serves as Secretary on the Austin Software Process Improvement Network Board of Directors. He also wants to know why everyone keeps asking him about sleep…

  1. I initially started a blog to keep my mind off the things I would rather not think about like ex boyfriends, family crises, the government, chem trails, hormones in chicken and why tv is such propaganda, etc. Then I started posting about my job. Currently, I am a stripper. I love to write anyway and there is so much new material everyday that I never get writers block. I find tons of humor in it, and hope others will as well and I keep it clean but it is not for children. This is not a pornographic tell all blog. It’s my wild ride through life. 😉

    • Well, you’ve made me curious.

I knew someone years ago who was, at the time, a DJ at a “gentleman’s club”. I’m curious to hear your perspective.

More on topic, though, is that by commenting on the blog, by being interactive, you’ve made it possible for me to read what you have written. Had you not done so, you would have passed, as so many others have, without leaving a trail back to your content. That is one way to promote yourself, by being interactive.

Of course, when I clicked the link to your blog, I got “no results were found for the requested archive”, in other words, there is no available content for me to look at, so that is a problem…

    • Hello Jim. I noticed you popped onto my blog. It certainly has taken a different direction of late. In many ways it is a good thing. I no longer work in a gentlemans club, (but the stories are still alive and well in my head) however certain pressing issues have come to light recently and I felt it important to write it all out. Now that I have done that, I am sure my blog will return to posts about the humorous meanderings we experience through life. In fact, I may take all the twisted, dastardly and darn right bad things that happen and write a dark, satiric, comedic screenplay. When life gives you lemons….

  2. Jim, so sorry you were unable to find content. That’s strange. I have 15 posts and 4 categories. I’ve been researching all over the internet on blogs, writing skills, seo searching etc., and I think I ramble too much! I need to edit, edit, edit. In any event, please stop by and try again. The blogs title is One Brief Moment: Permutations of an impermanent Stripper!
    All the best,
    Summer

    • Found the problem…

The link in your WordPress profile points to
      http://jacquelinesuzanne.wordpress.com/

      but your blog is at
      http://summersaid.wordpress.com/

You will probably want to modify your profile to point to the correct URL so that people can find their way to your content from your comments, or add content to the blank blog directing people to your content.

I think what you have to do is go to “My Blogs” on your Dashboard and check to see which blog is listed as primary. If that isn’t the problem, let me know, and I’ll try to help figure out what the problem is.

  3. This subject got a shout out at the Daily Post recently –
    http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2011/04/18/what-do-you-want-to-accomplish-with-your-blog/

    • I think my blog is about my life and my feelings, my hurts, pains and funny moments. I tried to make that clear in my “Disclaimer”. Sometimes I write funny or inspirational ramblings. I even put one of my recipes on there and may add more since I am a gourmet cook. Lately, it’s been about sociopathic relationships and how to avoid them. Perhaps my blog is about saving mankind from itself…Too big of a goal Jim??? My new goal is to come up with a new goal! 😉

      • Saving mankind may feel like tilting at windmills sometimes, but it is not too big a goal to work at. Just don’t try to take it on all by yourself…

  4. […] Brevity is good, breif and pithy or attention-getting is even better.  Of course, you have to have the content to back it up […]
