“When all you have is a hammer…”

“…every blog post looks like a nail.”

I tend to look at things through the lens of my own experience, and sometimes it is hard to step outside of that.

My advice to jobseekers is to use social media (blogs, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc) to promote their expertise in whatever career area they are pursuing, to go the specialist route rather than the generalist route.

This does not exclude doing the generalist route in addition to the specialist route.  I have three blogs that I maintain (plus a placeholder blog, and one more that I am not yet ready to unveil).  I have chosen to go the specialist route for all of them, and for posts that don’t belong in any of the specializations, I post to my Facebook notes. It would be within reason for someone to maintain a general blog and a specialist blog, posting daily (or whatever frequency you wish) on the generalist blog, and weekly on the specialist blog (or even cross-post the specialist entries to both, and do six other posts a week to the generalist blog).

My advice to you is… (get ready for it…)

Find a career-related topic area where you are an expert, or have experience to share, and can develop yourself as an expert. Blog on that topic.

Contrary to the addage “It isn’t what you know but who you know,” reality is “It isn’t what or who you know, it’s who knows you.” Blogging is one part of a social media strategy to make yourself known to people. (Read more on Career Management 2.0)

So, yeah, today I’m not stepping outside my zone. The hammer has got to get some exercise once in a while. (And no, that isn’t a Dr. Horrible reference. Get your mind out of the gutter…)
